Holly McCafferty of MJM Marine Holly McCafferty joined MJM Marine as a Technical Engineer in September 2023 as part of MJM Marine’s Navigator (Student Engagement) Programme, in conjunction with Southern Regional College.

The Navigator programme provides Holly with the opportunity to balance her studies whilst gaining first hand engineering experience through a Higher-Level Apprenticeship. Holly stated, “Working as a Higher-Level Apprentice with MJM Marine has allowed me to combine live marine based engineering projects with study and provided me with a valuable insight into the many applications of engineering in the real world.”

Holly’s aspirations to be an Engineer began at a young age, with a keen fascination and curiosity towards mechanics and structural functions. Working in conjunction with her passion for STEM and Mathematics the foundation of Holly’s engineering career was formed, as she progressed from Our Lady’s Grammar School, Newry to Southern Regional College to further her studies. As Holly expressed, “I enjoy problem-solving and have always had an appreciation for the application of engineering within today’s world.”

As a Technical Engineer each day brings a new and exciting challenge for Holly from responding to technical matters with solutions and guidance to preparing important specifications for materials and equipment for projects. Holly recently represented MJM Marine whilst visiting the MS Manara in March 2024. She attended important site meetings with MJM’s client and subcontractors proving to be a very valued member of the Team. Holly reflected upon the trip saying, “This experience allowed me to gain a comprehensive insight into the project objectives, to build relationships with subcontractors and gain hands-on engineering experience.”

However, this is only the beginning for Holly as over the next five years she plans to continue her professional development within MJM Marine. On completing her Higher-Level Apprenticeship Level Five Foundation Degree, she intends to pursue a Higher Level Six Degree which will enable her to obtain her Bachelor of Engineering. Holly is extremely grateful to her colleagues in MJM Marine, as she acknowledges that everyone never fails to provide inspiration and motivation for her professional and personal development.  According to Holly, “Their innovation and ability to navigate challenges serves as a perfect example to any aspiring engineer… I couldn’t ask for a better team!”

MJM Marine is proud to have Holly as a Higher-Level Apprentice Technical Engineer. She is a true ambassador for young females aspiring towards a career in Engineering. Holly embodies MJM Marine’s core company values – A Can-Do Attitude, Reliability, Teamwork, Collaboration and Quality to the highest standard.
