Tell us about your organisation and your role within it.
I am a Chartered Civil Engineer and an Associate Director of Engineering for McAdam.
What has been your career journey so far?
I graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2008 with a Civil Engineering degree—a proud achievement, especially as a young, single mother. I started my career at Scott Wilson (now AECOM) during the global recession, where I earned my professional qualifications, renovated homes, welcomed two more children, and met my husband—my greatest supporter.
In 2019, I joined the National Trust as Regional Project Manager, combining my love for nature with complex heritage projects. When COVID struck, I faced furlough and then redundancy. Soon after, I joined McAdam, where I now lead teams on large-scale environmental improvement projects—a perfect blend of my skills and passions.
I’ve also gained invaluable mentorship through the Centre of Learning, which has empowered me to embrace every twist in my journey. I hope it’s far from over—I’m enjoying the ride!
Describe yourself in three words.
Resilient, Dedicated, Inspired.
What is the one skill that helps you the most in your role?
Interpersonal communication—I love connecting with people and fostering collaboration. Relationships and community matter greatly to me. When we work together with mutual respect and positivity, that’s when we can create meaningful change. It also helps that I just love a good natter!
Do you have any advice for others in your sector?
The engineering and construction sector can be tough, particularly for women.
My advice: prioritise self-care and stay anchored to your core values. Surround yourself with a supportive community, both inside and outside the sector. Build relationships that uplift you professionally and personally.
Are there any exciting plans in the year ahead in your organisation that you can share with us?Following the success of EI Northern Region’s first-ever Engineers Week 2024, I’m thrilled to announce it’s happening again in March 2025! I find real joy in this volunteer role, particularly in building a strong, like-minded team to deliver an exceptional experience for young people. If you’re interested in joining us, please reach out!
Who is an inspiration in your career?
The incredible women in my life—my daughters, cousins, and friends. Their strength, especially during tough times, reminds me to stay true to my values and focus on making a meaningful impact where it matters most.
What’s your favourite break-time snack?
Previously, it was coffee—lots of it! However, since joining an amazing Health & Wellbeing Group, I’ve been encouraged to swap the coffee mug for healthier options. My current favourite snack is natural yoghurt with dark chocolate and blueberries, alongside plenty of water to stay hydrated.
If you had to pick your soundtrack song to get you through the working day, what would it be?
That varies depending on the task! Right now, I’m enjoying 80s pop for light tasks. For research or learning, I turn to Irish composer Patrick Cassidy. But when it’s time for project reporting or big deadlines, Tiësto or Eminem keeps me pumped and focused!
