At a glance…

Managers are always juggling three balls. Task, people and process. They are responsible for overseeing and leading the work of a group of people, for planning and maintaining work systems and procedures all whilst encouraging the optimum performance of your team.

Therefore, when managing a group of people, soft skills are essential. In fact, managers with great leadership soft skills can boost their team's productivity, reduce attrition, and advance their own career journey. During this 1-day in-person programme with Penny Toogood of Proclaim Consulting you will build emotional intelligence and learn how to overcome self-limiting beliefs, communicate with confidence, understand how to use a coaching style to improve engagement and performance, manage difficult conversations and have 1-2-1’s that work.

How will this course help me?

The move from being a high performing individual on a team, to being responsible for others is not an easy transition. This highly interactive programme equips you with the tools you need to be an impactful and effective leader who is capable of leading yourself, and also a high performing team.

During this course you will discover:

Part 1: Your identity as a manager through emotional intelligence & overcoming self-limiting beliefs
Emotional intelligence
Understanding yourself and understanding others is crucial if we want to be able to manage well. It is only when we understand our identity, our values, our motivation and vision that we will be able to effectively help others to develop and grow. We learn to respond more effectively when it counts and we demonstrate empathy that allows us to perceive how other people see and feel about things.

Overcoming self-limiting beliefs
Many people struggle to reach their full potential because they are plagued with limiting beliefs about their abilities. Transitioning into a new role with increased responsibilities is when many people struggle to get past feelings of inadequacy. Imposter Syndrome is very common. We help people to identify negative thought patterns and reframe their thinking.
Part 2: Your skills as a manager by communicating with confidence & developing a coaching conversation style
Communicating with Confidence
As a manager you are required to communicate to those you are responsible for and those you are responsible to. Learning to listen effectively and understand you audience and how they communicate will help you tailor your message to ensure you are getting through.

Developing a coaching conversations style
Using a coaching style is shown to improve staff engagement, motivation and overall team performance. When managers coach, they reinforce strengths and explore challenges with the employee. Successful coaching guides employees towards success but promotes independent thinking and collaboration to overcome obstacles
Part 3: Your role as a manager - understanding your role, your team and the power of cognitive diversity
Understanding your role

Managers are always juggling three balls. Task, people and process. They are responsible for overseeing and leading the work of a group of people, for planning and maintaining work systems and procedures all whilst encouraging the optimum performance of their team. The most successful managers are able to see how others work best and then help them achieve their goals.

The power of cognitive diversity

To understand how to get the best out of your team you need to recognise the behaviours that teams move through as they develop and grow. By studying the work of Psychologist Bruce Tuckman (Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing) we can equip ourselves to face up to challenges, tackle problems, find solutions, plan work, and deliver results. Cognitive diversity is an important factor in reaching our goals. It boosts innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration. By recognising and leveraging the cognitive diversity in a team, delegates will reap the rewards of gaining new ideas and perspectives they might not have thought about before. This helps them to solve problems more efficiently. Furthermore it promotes am inclusive team atmosphere.
Part 4: Your development as a manager - the importance of feedback, managing difficult conversations and 1-2-1s that work
The importance of feedback

Feedback improves a team's confidence, motivation to learn and ultimately, their performance. It's also what people want - 65% of employees say they want more feedback. Employees have to know what they are doing well and where they can improve. By learning how to give constructive feedback delegates will create a positive working experience for their team.

Managing difficult conversations

As a manager you can't avoid difficult conversations, they are a necessary part of working well with others. Reaching an understanding is often the first step toward creating a better work environment. By adopting a framework and being equipped with useful techniques delegates will find that the conversations rarely are as difficult as we expect. 1-2-1's that work The 1:1 is the best way for managers and those who report to them to connect on pressing issues, develop a strong relationship, and ensure that employees feel like they’re working toward their goals— at work. Without a proper framework, agenda, and mindset, however, the 1:1 meeting can become just another meeting in your day. Using a simple format you can ensure both you and your team look forward to 1-1 meetings

“This programme is perfect for anyone who has recently taken on management responsibility for the first time. Penny is an excellent trainer who facilitated the session so well, striking the perfect balance between expert teaching and the facilitation of group discussions and paired exercises. It was a great opportunity to meet women from other organisations working across a range of different roles, and the entire day had such a relaxed, open and honest feel to it.”

“The day was really well organised by the WiB team and the location handy for travelling into the city. Penny's presenting style was brilliant. She encouraged us to contribute our thoughts and experiences but didn't force it which helped keep things moving so the day seemed to go at a perfect pace. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for some new inspiration and guidance on their journey as a manager.”
